The new year is here and for many in Florida, 2017 was a bad year due to damage caused by Hurricane Irma and other storms.

Here are the top four stories of the roofing industry, according to South Florida’s own Lifetime Roofing. Whatever suits your roofing needs, Lifetime Roofing offers unbeatable price for options from shingle to tile, metal and solar.

Top roofing stories of 2017

4. Investments on the rise

Investment in construction was up across the United States this past fiscal year, especially in Florida, according to the American Builders and Contractors association.

Residential and nonresidential construction investment accounted for 6.2 percent of U.S. gross domestic product (adjusted for inflation), the industry’s largest contribution to U.S. economy since the end of 2009.

3. Solar becoming more popular

Is the future of roofing solar? Tesla Motors boss Elon Musk thinks so and due to Hurricane Irma, Lifetime Roofing has seen a spark a surge in demand for solar panels and batteries as homeowners spend extended periods without power following recent hurricanes.

2. New technologies

According to a recent Dodge Data & Analytics study, smartphones are used on most job sites, and tablet and drone use is growing. Mobile tools such as cameras are used by 85 percent of all contractors onsite. Advancements in technology like 3D printing, and self-driving vehicles should become a reality in 2018.

1. Natural disasters

Before the devastation of Hurricane Harvey in Texas and Irma in Florida, South Florida saw plenty of flooding in August, with Miami Beach suffering a massive flood due to storm surge. But the biggest impact of natural disasters was from Hurricane Irma, which unofficially is fifth-costliest hurricane on record as it swept through the Caribbean in September. While recovery efforts in Florida are improving and daily life is returning back to normal, there are still thousands of people waiting for roofs in Puerto Rico after the devastation from Hurricanes Irma and Maria.
