Cleanup from Hurricane Irma – unofficially is fifth-costliest hurricane on record – is approaching a much-welcomed end in the Florida Keys since the Category 4 storm made landfall on Monroe County Sept.10.
The cleanup numbers from Irma are staggering. Nearly 2.2 million cubic yards of debris – vegetation, appliances, shingles, construction and demolition waste – have been removed from Keys, Monroe County information officer Cammy Clark told the Florida Keys Keynoter.
Shingles debris have been a major problem for homeowners in paths of hurricanes but new technology has advanced to reduce roof damage. South Florida’s Lifetime Roofing has helped Irma victims rebuild with a number of roof options from tile to metal and solar.
Included in the debris removed from the Keys include over 18,800 large appliances classified as “white goods.”
“All of this collected hurricane debris was taken to debris-management sites in the Keys, where it is ground or mulched to make smaller for haul-out to the mainland for proper disposal,” Clark said. “Some of the vegetative debris was burned in the Keys. All white goods have their freon removed.”
Remaining white goods have been shipped to the mainland for recycling or disposal.
“In the hardest-hit area between [mile marker] 16 and 40, county and Florida Department of Transportation contractors have combined to collect 799,620 cubic yards of hurricane debris and 3,176 white goods,” the county reported, via the Keynoter.
Clark expects collection of debris in the Kets to be complete by mid-January.
According to CoreLogic, via the Miami Herald, flooding from Hurricane Irma has caused the costliest damage to homes and businesses in the storm’s path across the Caribbean and into Florida, Alabama, Georgia, North Carolina and South Carolina. The total insured and uninsured loss for both residential and commercial properties is estimated to be between $42.5 billion and $65 billion.
